Israel has launched the construction of a new school of residential real estate in an ethnically mixed neighbourhood in south Vancouver.
The new school, called Fort lauderdale, is slated to open later this year, with the first units expected to be built by 2019.
It is part of a long-term plan to help create a new, more ethnically diverse and ethnically-minority city in the north of Israel, said Ariel Beshara, chief executive of the Herzliya Jewish Community Council, a member of the project team.
The school is part a project that aims to attract more immigrants and create more jobs, Beshaya said.
The project has been underway for a number of years, he added.
Israel has a population of about 5 million, and its new capital is expected to have an average of 20,000 new immigrants a year.
It has had several attempts to expand the school over the years, but none of those efforts have resulted in a new building.
The city of Haifa in the south of Israel was the first to build a new residential school, in 2013, with more than 40 units.
Ariel Beshra, chief of the Israel-Canada Economic Cooperation Agency, said Haifa was the only municipality in Israel to build the new school and has since had more than 200 projects on the ground.
“Haifa has been trying to build schools for 20 years,” Beshora said.
“The Israelis did it.
But we never found the right combination.”
Construction on the new residential facility is expected be completed by the end of 2019, according to the Herzlian community council.
The Herzlians were among the first Jewish communities in Israel, founded in 1851, and were the first settlers to arrive in the country.
The city has about 2 million residents.
